Together with Skander Marketing we are developing swimming lesson books that increase motivation during swimming lessons. Even for children who find it exciting. With fun rewards and an engaging story, getting a swimming diploma becomes a breeze!
Swimming lessons: it can all be quite exciting. Cold water, the famous “hook,” and friends who might just pick it up a little faster. How do we ensure that all children attend swimming lessons with confidence and enjoyment? With storytelling and gamification!
Together with Skander Marketing, we are developing creative swimming lesson books that enhance the enjoyment of swimming lessons. Has a skill been achieved? Then kids earn a coin for their book! Children mirror the brave characters in the story. This keeps motivation high.
ApproachIn 2020, we realized a first swimming lesson book for Zwembad de Welle, part of Sportbedrijf Drachten. Children in the municipality now learn to swim with “Sibbe and Liefke. This is a customized swimming lesson book about the adventures of a seal and a spoonbill. The story came from Skander and we took care of all the artwork. In addition, we designed the collectible coins in the style of the story. An important point of attention during all that designing: the characters had to give the children a safe and encouraging feeling. Cheerful friends who assist you in your swimming adventure. And they more than succeeded!
ResultsMeanwhile, sports umbrellas and organizations in Rotterdam, Lelystad and Hoeksterwaard have also knocked on our door for customized swimming lesson books. For each batch a unique story is written and we design matching characters, prints and coins. This immediately gives the children a familiar feeling. Regularly, the characters we design are turned into real mascots for the pool or sports center in question. This of course makes the swimming adventure for the children even more tangible and fun!
This project contributes to SDG #3 Good Health and Well-Being & SDG #4 Quality Education. Remember as a small child when you were afraid to go swimming in the water? New things can always be a little exciting. Especially when they involve crucial skills like swimming. Gamified swimming teaching methods ensure that children experience less fear and more fun during lessons. This contributes to a positive association with sports and exercise – crucial for a long, healthy and happy life.
