Exercise and contact: these are two things that are important to keep mentally and physically fit during the corona crisis. Many people currently exercise at home, play games with the family more often and use Skype to communicate with family and friends. For the elderly, these very things are not obvious. Not everyone is digitally proficient and moving around is sometimes difficult. And then the days are pretty long. Practical help is indispensable, but entertainment and attention are also important. What remote games are suitable to play with the elderly? We have listed some ideas and tips.

Online games via smartphone or tablet

Tip in advance: for seniors who cannot yet (properly) use a smartphone or tablet, the Elderly Fund has the Helpdesk Welcome Online set up. Here the elderly can call with all digital questions. With a volunteer, a program can be followed to learn all the basic skills that come in handy now, such as video calling and installing apps and games.

What online games are appropriate to do with your grandmother, grandfather, neighbor, neighbor or an elderly person who simply likes to connect? Here are some suggestions.

  • Wordfeud! Actually the “online” version of Scrabble, a game that older people often already know and thus can pick up quickly. Put words together, score points and argue about words, existing or not, via the chat function.
  • Drawing together is also possible through an app: DrawSomething. Put all your drawing talent into battle and let your opponent guess what the drawing is supposed to represent. Maybe you will discover a new talent – and if not, at least you will have laughed. Simple and timeless!
  • For the people who are more into numbers, the old familiar Rummikub is also available as an app. Again, the game concept needs no explanation for most older people, which is nice when handling a smartphone or tablet may also take some effort and energy.

Want to meet new elders to assist during this time? The platform WeHelp connects neighbors to each other a has many helpful help tips. Via the Silver Line of the Elderly Fund you can get in touch by phone with elderly people who need a chat. Also the Listening Line puts elderly people in contact by phone with volunteers who listen to their concerns, or are simply ready for a chat. You can always suggest a game afterwards, of course. Especially if you do not yet know each other well, playing a game is a suitable icebreaker.

Games by landline phone or mail

Some older people are not digitally proficient and no longer have the energy to learn. But a landline phone, almost everyone can handle that. You can also suggest playing a game over the phone. Examples:

  • Do a telephone music quiz. Compile your own online playlist of music from the past and play the songs over the phone. Think of a question for each song in advance: who is the singer/songwriter? What is the best memory of this year? There is plenty to come up with! Good for the atmosphere and for lots of new conversation.
  • ‘Adopt’ an elder and send him or her a personal card via Coromapost, an initiative of Omapost. Want to give it a game twist? Put a riddle on the card and ask the elderly person to send back the solution. That way a fun correspondence will be created.
  • Those who want to go big, send a package Puzzle Post toe: newspaper pieces, letters and documents combine to form a story to get totally absorbed in.
  • For the creative, put together your own letterbox package of “paper” entertainment. Think of a nice new puzzle book or printed out games, riddles and puzzles from the Internet. This is another way you still make the possibilities of the Internet available to someone who could use some extra entertainment right now.
